Game shows: what are they?
A game show is a genre of broadcast viewing entertainment (radio, television, internet, stage or other) where contestants compete for a reward.
These programs can either be participatory or demonstrative and are typically directed by a host, sharing the rules of the program as well as commentating and narrating where necessary. The history of game shows dates back to the invention of television as a medium.
On most game shows, contestants either have to answer questions or solve puzzles, typically to win either money or prizes. Game shows often reward players with prizes such as cash, trips and goods and services provided by the show's sponsor.
How to become a contestant on some of the most popular game shows today?
1. Squid Games:
Squid Games is a South Korean survival drama television series that revolves around a contest where 456 players, all of whom are in deep financial hardship, risk their lives to play a series of deadly children's games for the chance to win a ₩45.6 billion (US$35 million, €33 million, or £29 million as of broadcast) prize. The title of the series draws from a similarly named Korean children's game. Hwang had conceived of the idea based on his own economic struggles early in life, as well as the class disparity in South Korea and capitalism. Though he had initially written it in 2009, he was unable to find a production company to fund the idea until Netflix took an interest around 2019 as part of their drive to expand their foreign programming offerings.

Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? (often informally called Millionaire) is an international television game show franchise of British origin, created by David Briggs, Mike Whitehill and Steven Knight. In its format, currently owned and licensed by Sony Pictures Television, contestants tackle a series of multiple-choice questions to win large cash prizes in a format that twists on many game show genre conventions – only one contestant plays at a time, similar to radio quizzes; contestants are given the question before deciding whether to answer, and have no time limit to answer questions; and the amount offered increases as they tackle questions that become increasingly difficult. The maximum cash prize offered in most versions of the format is an aspirational value in local currency, such as one million pounds in the U.K. or 70 million rupees (7 crore) in India.
3. Wheel of Fortune
Wheel of Fortune (often known simply as Wheel[b]) is an American television game show created by Merv Griffin. The show has aired continuously since January 1975. The show features a competition in which contestants solve word puzzles, similar to those used in hangman, to win cash and prizes determined by spinning a giant carnival wheel. The current version of the series, which airs in nightly syndication, premiered on September 19, 1983. It stars Pat Sajak and Vanna White as host and co-host.
4. Jeopardy
Jeopardy! is an American game show created by Merv Griffin. The show is a quiz competition that reverses the traditional question-and-answer format of many quiz shows. Rather than being given questions, contestants are instead given general knowledge clues in the form of answers and they must identify the person, place, thing, or idea that the clue describes, phrasing each response in the form of a question.
5. The Wall
The Wall is an American television game show airing on NBC, which premiered on December 19, 2016. The show is hosted by Chris Hardwick, who also serves as executive producer on the show along with LeBron James, Maverick Carter, and Andrew Glassman.[1]
6. Family Feud
Family Feud is an American television game show created by Mark Goodson. It features two families who compete to name the most popular answers to survey questions in order to win cash and prizes.
7. Match Game
Match Game is an American television panel game show that premiered on NBC in 1962 and has been revived several times over the course of the last six decades. The game features contestants trying to match answers given by celebrity panelists to fill-in-the-blank questions. Beginning with the CBS run of the 1970s, the questions are often formed as humorous double entendres.
8. Deal or No Deal
Deal or No Deal is an American version of the international game show of Dutch origin of the same name. The show is hosted by Howie Mandel, and premiered on December 19, 2005, on NBC. The game is primarily unchanged from the international format: a contestant chooses one briefcase from a selection of 26. Each briefcase contains a cash value from $0.01 to $1,000,000. Over the course of the game, the contestant eliminates cases from the game, periodically being presented with a "deal" from The Banker to take a cash amount to quit the game. Should the contestant refuse every deal, they are given the chance to trade the case they chose at the outset for the only one left in play at the time; they then win the amount in the selected case.
9. Chain Reaction
Chain Reaction is an American television game show created by Bob Stewart, in which players compete to form chains composed of two-word phrases. At the crux of the game is a word chain. In the chain, a certain number of words - eight words in 1980, seven words from 1986 to 2016 as well as for the fourth round in 2021, and six words for the first three rounds in 2021 - are connected in some way, with both the word at the top and the word at the bottom revealed on the outset. By making inferences based on the revealed words and the revealed letters in incomplete words, contestants try to fill in the word chains to score points
11. Master Minds
Master Minds is an American game show airing on the Game Show Network. The show debuted on June 10, 2019, under the title Best Ever Trivia Show, hosted by Sherri Shepherd and regularly featuring Ken Jennings, Muffy Marracco, Jonathan Corbblah, Arianna Haut, and Ryan Chaffee.[1][2] A first season with the show retitled Master Minds debuted on April 6, 2020, hosted by Brooke Burns.
12. People Puzzler
People Puzzler, hosted by Leah Remini features three contestants who will put their pop culture knowledge to the test to complete crosswords from the pop culture magazine. The player who has won the most points after three rounds will move on to the Fast Puzzle Bonus Round where they will have the opportunity to win a cash prize.
13. Tug of Words
Tug of Words is an American television game show that premiered on Game Show Network on November 8, 2021. The game is played over three rounds. The first two rounds are played to earn an advantage in the third round, and the team that wins the third round wins $1,000 and the chance to play the bonus round to increase their winnings to $10,000.
14. Catch 21
Catch 21 hosted by Alfonso Ribeiro and Whitney Carson. You might recognize the duo from Dancing with the Stars. Catch 21 is a Vegas style Game Show where three contestants are each given a card to start a blackjack hand from a standard 52-card deck and must answer trivia questions.
